The Blind Have Self-Help Superpowers: The Commencement Speech of Erik Weihenmayer

Erik WeihenmayerNo long article today, suckers.  That’s because all around the world commencement season is in full swing (sweeeet), as colleges and (soon) high schools graduate thousands and thousands of (sometimes) accomplished students.

And I’ve uncovered for you ladies and gents the most awesomest of speeches, from a BLIND MOUNTAIN CLIMBER (suddenly feeling a little more guilty for quitting my meager workouts)…

These speeches are pretty much all the freaking same…some local or national person of some questionable fame or accomplishment, late of life, who bestows all the lessons he or she has learned as founder of some company, or winner of some prize, or whatever junk thing like that that no one but their Mom cares about.

I don’t even remember who spoke at my college graduation.  I remember it sucked.  I remember it was cliché.  They usually are.  Just ask around.

The best speakers, though, make the cliché interesting.  They’re actually able to spark some inspiration in the young men and women in attendance, now entering the dawn of adult life.

So, I wanted to post a speech (if I found any) that seemed of actual quality, because I am a big believer in the power of words, in the ability of a few sentences to, for whatever reason, stay with us, and forever be in the back of our minds.  Like Jesse McCartney songs, but without the sexy rhythms and smooth choruses.

So, here I’ve linked the speech of Erik Weihenmayer, the blind climber of the tallest peak on each of the 7 continents (not very many), addressed to the 2011 graduating class at the awesomely prestigious Bucknell University.  You may find it pretty sweet as I did, or you may suck at life (in which case you should watch it anyway).

What’d you think?

Yay or nay?  Sweet or only VERY sweet?
